What the Overline is

The Overline is a gondola line: enclosed cabins carrying ten people each, hanging from a cable that runs continuously above the Beltline. Cabins arrive every thirty seconds. There is no schedule and no platform wait; you walk up and go.

The six Phase 1 locations were set after the 2024 open houses and revised once at the working group's request. Comment on the siting is open until 30 September.

Where things stand

In 2016, seventy-one percent of Atlanta voters approved a half-penny tax for the purpose, as the ballot put it, of “significantly expanding and enhancing MARTA transit service.” It named no mode and no route. Ten years later that sentence is still the whole argument, and no one's claim on that money is stronger than the case they can make for it.

We made ours in January 2025. The aerial alignment was added to the alternatives that April, and twice over the following seven months we were sent away to revise our costings. Twice we came back with them.

Since the item was held in November we have written three times to ask a single question: who asked for it. Two letters were not answered. The third came back with the sentence we were given in November: the item is under further review.

In three separate rooms we have been told there are concerns. We have not been told whose.
