The Beltline transit question, in dates

We are asked, fairly often, to explain why a corridor this obvious does not have transit on it. We have stopped trying to explain and started keeping a list instead. Everything below is a matter of public record and is linked to a source. Nothing on this page is ours.

1999. A master’s thesis at Georgia Tech proposes converting the belt railway that encircles Atlanta into a combined transit and trail corridor. The idea is adopted, over the following decade, as city policy.

8 November 2016. Atlanta voters approve a half-penny sales tax by 71 percent, 123,051 to 48,959. The ballot describes the purpose as “significantly expanding and enhancing MARTA transit service.” It names no mode and no route. The levy is projected to raise about $2.5 billion over forty years. Collection begins the following year and has not stopped.

March 2025. The mayor withdraws support for beginning Beltline rail on the Eastside Trail, favoring the southside instead.

27 May 2025. A committee of city, MARTA and Atlanta Beltline Inc. officials votes seven to one, in a closed session, to pause funding for the design of Eastside light rail. The vote is not brought to the MARTA board as required. It is not disclosed at subsequent council briefings, a community town hall, or two newspaper editorial board meetings.

January 2026. The vote becomes public when the Atlanta Journal-Constitution obtains the minutes under the Georgia Open Records Act. Several council members learn of it from the reporter.

May 2026. The chairman of Cox Enterprises argues in an op-ed that Beltline rail is a “pollutive, antiquated” concept and proposes autonomous vehicles instead.

June 2026. A free autonomous shuttle pilot begins operating on a two-mile route connecting the Southwest trail to a MARTA station. Four vehicles. Twelve months.

Today. No rail has been built on the Beltline.
